Arthouse Co-Op's Sketchbook Project:

"Thousands of sketchbooks will be exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the country.After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be barcoded and available for the public to view."

As a participating artist of the 2011 Sketchbook Project, my book is finally finished! My theme was "Things Found on Restaurant Napkins". I started the book in early November and yesterday finally finished and popped it in the mail. Above is a picture of the completed book, cover and all -all hand-sewn and rebound with different papers and fabric. Check out my Flickr page for the full and complete slideshow!

Continuing the saga of Lois, the Corpse Flower, she finally bloomed and crowds went wild with anticipation of checking out her stench before she collapses back into dormancy......I had the opportunity to visit one last time and experience the stank full on. Let's just say that 5 minutes of it was more than enough and I won't be missing it any time soon. In order to preserve her memory though, I did come up with an alternative: Above is my little 'homage' to Lois. I'm thinking some charms, pendants and cameos will be cropping up in the near future...and no, luckily, these won't stink. ;)

Corpse Flower

A super rare occurence is happening in my town. The blooming of the Corpse Flower at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Named 'Lois', there are only 29 documented bloomings of this massive flower, which when opened, emits a smell reminiscent of a dead cadaver. Hence, the name. Scientifically known as the Amorphophallus Titanum, the plant thrives in the rainforests of Sumatra, and blooms every 1-3 years. With the largest inflorescence of any plant, the Corpse Flower casts an ominous and foreboding site -reminiscent of something you'd find in the Land of the Lost, or in a prehistoric period with ginormous vegetation. What caught my attention was obviously the buzz about the smell, and the size of the plant -standing somewhere between 6-7 ft tall, leaves with the inside color of deep dark purple and an enormous spathe that shoots straight up, erect like a spear...(also been called "Devil's Tongue"). Currently, 'Lois' is still waiting to bloom. In my city of H-Town, the buzz has been fanatical. Throngs of people have come out to see if the blooming has started, and currently nothing yet...but the anticipation is growing steadily day by day.... I'm hoping she'll open one of these days, because like I said, I'm actually looking forward to the experience of smelling rotting flesh. Weird, maybe, but it's the chance of a lifetime to witness a miracle of nature, and I'm not missing out by any means.

Los Angeles native, Jeff Nishinaka's career spans more than 28 years with works that encompass impressive commercial clients as well as the fine art you see here. A student of UCLA and graduate of the prestigious Art Center College of Design, his portfolio is astounding. The actor Jackie Chan also happens to be one of his close friends, and to this date owns the largest collection of his stuff. Pretty sweet.

I came across these 'shoes' on Etsy...more like sculptures than anything else. I'm reminded of a few things I hold a fond appreciation for: Veggie subs, Chinese New Year, Masquerade Balls and Flying Spaghetti Monsters. Pretty sweet. SoleSensations is the culprit behind these fanciful creations. Not too sure if they are meant for wearing, but they definitely get 1st prize in the 'totally unique' department.

I've always harbored a fascination with cryptozoology -specifically speaking, the Mothman legend. As an established UFO researcher, John Keel made an amazing and unexpected discovery when he visited Point Pleasant, VA one day, long ago. A myriad of people have claimed to have witnessed the creature, and tales of MIB and other strange events fall alongside it. The legend still lives on, and the mystery remains: Mothman: a messenger for Doomsday or an Angel of Death, or perhaps a UFO all along? Ever since I saw The Mothman Prophecies film and read the book, tingles up my spine still take hold from time to time. If I ever have a conversation with Indrid Cold, I'll be sure to blog about it...that is, if I'm still around. (yeah I know....pretty grim)

I've always loved the EGL Goth styles and these cameo necklaces are my latest creations taking inspiration from them. There will be tons more available in a variety of colors -each piece is hand-molded from scratch, hand-assembled and painstakingly put together. The small bat-wings are left matte to offset the shiny blacks. I love all things Victorian and I feel these necklaces would fit nicely into this dark aesthetic, along with stuff for fans of Steampunk. Each cameo is unique and each setting is also hand-molded. The lady in the second picture was made from a mold off an original victorian pin in my jewelry collection. I can't wait to incorporate some more ideas soon. This is just the beginning.

Steve Jobs Plush Doll

I've always been an apple-aficianado, engulfed in the mass of hype and pretty packaging that comes with all mac products in addition to their astounding performance (my powerbook has served me well for the last 7 years and soon I plan to upgrade to a shiny macbook pro)...but lo and behold, 'cult of mac' followers might get a kick out of this doll...in recent times, artisans have embraced apple products and now you can see everything from apple keyboard jewelry, to miniature ipod cases infiltrating the craft world. Polymer clay is no exception --miniature ipod charms and other mac-geekery crop up frequently in the sculpey/fimo world. I'm all for this homage to the much-loved computers, but I don't think I could sleep at night with this doll staring at me!

Recently I've been a little tetris-obsessed, acquiring versions of the classic game for both xbox 360 and nintendo ds. Friends have been bugging me about making little tetrimino charms out of clay for awhile now, and when I stumbled across this article on the shinyshiny.tv blog, even more inspiration was to be had. Video-games have actually been great for inspiration to me --the design and thought that goes into characters for games such as Katamari, Mario and more has allowed me to brainstorm with my own creative juices, in an effort to create designs that are simplistic yet streamlined --reconfigured into a 'cute-format' that perhaps would be a condensed version of something in real life.

Below is a picture of an alley way created by an artist with giant tetris blocks that appear to be falling. If we could live in a real world of surrealistic wonder such as this depiction, or something whimsical that almost smacked of a cartoon universe, I'm not sure how that would be, --but I think I would personally appreciate it...

In my opinion, Valentine's day is a severly overrated holiday conjured up by the media to guilt the majority of men and women around the world into showering their partners with a plethora of candy,flowers,dinners and whatever other material mumbo-jumbo, in order to validate their undying love for one another. (naked, pagan romans with whips are a good excuse, but I really fail to see this as a logical credential for history).

Recent statistics:

"An estimated 45.8 percent of U.S. consumers will exchange Valentine's
Day candy, according to the retail federation survey—adding up to a
sweet billion dollars in sales, the National Confectioners Association
says.

About 75 percent of that billion is from sales of chocolate,
which has been associated with romance at least since Mexico's Aztec

Aztec Empire? Maybe they are talking about the sacrificial heart rites to the gods...? (I saw apocalypto for example, --that poor mayan dude didn't look like he was feelin' the love when they ripped his heart out) At any rate, I'd have to say that I have a love hate relationship with Valentine's day, but one thing I can't deny is my undying love for my awesome Komodokat customers:

It's true --the two have banded together to create smashing jewelry and accessories with snorkin' kozik labbits, munnys and more...

The main thing that caught my attention was the tiny top-hat. I have had plans to feature these mini-hats encrusted with my charms in the Komodokat shop very soon, and I was somewhat disappointed to come across this, but at the same time delighted. Saw Wall-E this weekend....adorable, and definitely Pixar's best by way of animation so far. I especially appreciated the minimal dialogue in the beginning of the film which set a nice tone for the movie as a whole. Anybody see an E.T. resemblance, or is it just me? As far as little robots go, I'll definitely be purchasing the miniature sized Wall-E that's already available in stores. Cute cute and more cute --this film was inspiring and delightful. Maybe some komodo-bots will emerge in the not-so-distant future?

I don't know about you, but this site kind of grossed me out... Whereas I can appreciate art and understand that death is an inevitable occurrance in life, I'm not an advocate of animal cruelty or taxidermy in any way, shape or form, and the photographs on this site struck me as freakish --something that conjures up visions of animal poachers capitalizing on dead mink-skins, crocodile purses with claws, and foot-stools made out of elephant feet... Without presuming how these birds gave up the ghost, only to be displayed as an ornamented trophy around someone's neck, I can only furrow my brow and be glad that my creations are made out of clay. Looking at the title of the site, it is obvious that this is an attempt to make some sort of artistic statement concerning 'life vs. death', but I'm likely to think that the message can be conveyed effectively (and has been no doubt) without pissing off millions of bird-owners around the world in addition to bunny fans... I'm just sayin...

Born in 1974 (or 73?) she's been a staple for little girls everywhere and now grown women have a fascination with her that has extended to products such as makeup, stereos, toasters, mp3 players , toilet seat covers, nose-hair clippers and beyond. Holly Hobby didn't hold a candle to Hello Kitty. Not only has she made her way through the generations, but she keeps popping up in my life like a cold that won't go away. My battered wallet which houses all my important cards, identification and money, sports the venerable cat and friends, so it's no wonder that eventually I'd find myself making something out of clay in homage to her:

Tis' the wedding season and from where I'm standing, it seems as if everyone and their mom is getting married. Tying the knot has never been so popular and after 5 weddings going on 3 more to follow, the 'great rite of eternal commitment' has managed to invade my quiet living space like a pie in the face. So here's what I came up with in preparation for my lovely friend's special day --a series of cute bag candy for her blushing bridesmaids:

5 bags courtesy of the fabulous designer Betsey Johnson are outfitted with only the best in girly polka-dot initials (one for each girl), fleur-de lis charms, polka-dot heart charms and feminine ribbons. Somehow, the mix makes me think of strawberries, cream, vanilla scented perfumes, pink poodles and lacey lingerie. Now, we just need that trip to Paris, and the cycle will be complete...

These LEGEND OF ZELDA jewel charms were custom made for lovely customer Erin Violet. A challenge considering the fact that I have never been a hardcore fan of the game and re-creating the sparkling characteristics of a real gemstone out of clay was a major brainstorm. I think they turned out swell personally, and this has therefore inspired me to tackle a line of Katamari accessories (one of my fave games) in the not so distant future!

Steampunk rising...

According to wikipedia, steampunk is:

" a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction which came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles or analog computers; these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or a presumption of functionality."

It's probably no wonder that I find myself leaning towards these aesthetics with welcome arms and Fritz Lang's Metropolis still stands to this day, as one of my alltime favorite movies...so with the recent explosion of steampunk finds on etsy, my excitement burst and I went out and gathered a multitude of stuff including watch parts, victorian charms and tiny test-tubes...We'll see what comes of it. Steampunk kawaii? Perhaps, but maybe something will end up on deviantart in the future...For now, I can drool at the likes of these:

There will be a variety of designs from higher-end jewelry, mixed media works, and more complex art pieces and projects that will house my *deeper* creative side, like this customized necklace which has been loaded with over 30 charms (all handmade and painstakingly handpainted --I literally spent hours attaching each charm to a delicate chain and customizing certain ones to suit my weird personality --ha!); some of which are unavailable in my shop and *only* available in what you see here.

There are so many amazing people on Etsy, but lately I've noticed that most of my purchases seem to be going towards Texas artists. ('cuz we rule!) literally...I mean, this corset showed up when I was browsing Etsy and I SNATCHED it up. The designer, Louise Black hails from Dallas, and her style emphasizes the gothic, victoriana/ephemerical sphere of steampunky goodness...Yay Texas! There are so many Etsy sellers that continue to amaze me with their art/craft...It's no wonder I've almost completely given up buying anything in actual storefronts anymore, let alone mass-produced items....Handmade all the way -- and in the way of handmade clothing, it has always been tacky to me when you see 50 people wearing the exact same outfit you have on --LAME!

Horrordance is coming up (date TBA) and I'm in a creative mode thinking about all the groovy things to make incorporating the gory/creepy theme. I'm definitely making more of these:

Calavera skull stretch bracelets in an assortment of colors, creepy bones, blood and guts, maggots, zombies, and maybe some bmovie film themes thrown in for good measure. I've always been inspired by the creative fashion trends of Japan and the Elegant Gothic Lolita phenomenon has been no exception. The frilly dresses coupled with sweetly innocent youth, mixed with a dark twist --it's all endlessly fascinating to me. Someday I hope to travel to Japan to fully experience the atmosphere and culture in all its varied facets...Pondering this wish inspired me to create this bracelet:
I love purple, although I have a very small amount of it in my wardrobe and wares....The tiny roses, black bow, bat and miniature hearts makes me think of teenage girls dressed to the nines in black velvet and white lace, clutching their Vivienne Westwood satchels and smiling, bow-legged for the camera...a look so difficult to pull-off, but at the same time delightful to look upon. Gimme black bows and hearts over jelly shoes any day.

The breath of Hallow's Eve is almost upon us. Unfortunately this Halloween falls on a Wednesday which leads to excessive cramming over the weekend to party like its 1999 before the drudgery of routine comes back into play. In reality, every day is Halloween for me, but there's something about the crisp smell of autumn leaves, the stench of roasting pecans and sumptuous pumpkin pie that makes me spiral into a frenzy of wistfullness and quiet joy. You can't achieve the autumn effect in the middle of July when it's sweltering outside, and people are walking around in shorts and hot pants. ick.

Black cats, spiders, bats and pumpkins, spooky ghosts and costumes galore. I am reminded time and time again that Halloween is the one BIG day, where everyone gets to be someone else for awhile...Don the masks, literally, and lose themselves in a world far, far-reaching from their own.

Maybe this is an extension of the human psyche, wanting to experience something more? Whatever the case, I think it's a wonderful time period and a reminder to live your life to the fullest, 'cuz each day might be your last.

Every once in awhile you meet someone who has a creative spark who is vibrant and full of energy, because they love what they are doing, and what they are creating. That energy rubs off like glitter that gets everywhere, and those little specks make you feel all sparkly inside. You become painfully aware at how they linger for a long while after, --on your clothes, on your hair, on your arms, on your nose...but you can't shake it, that sparkly stuff...it sticks like a glue that only comes off with excessive rubbing...

That's kinda how I felt when I met Natasha Epperson. She's totally unique, cool and creative and completely loves what she's doing and what she does best: photography.

It was no wonder, I was honored to make this for her, at her request:

Rainy Days and Deadbeats

The two seem to fit together like a hand and glove...I don't know what the deal is lately, but I've run into a couple of snags with some non-paying buyers which really gets my blood boiling. The time, effort, attention spent in creating my guys is not something I take lightly. This is my 'craft' hobby on the side, but as a serious artist, I take pride in everything I create, so when someone stiffs me or disregards this through non-payment or other lame accounts, it literally feels like a giant boot is stomping on the hours of work I spent. I don't think people realize how many artists and craftsmen out there are literally suffering for their art. No, its not just a fashionable jargon-statement of the artworld. It's friggin true. Yeah, venting feels good....

On the silver-lining side of the dark, stormy cloud, I completed another wholesale order today :

PB & J, and melted buttered toasts. Plus 8 little milk cartons, which I didn't include in this pic. These were a lot of fun --the realization is finally crystallizing within me, at the absurdity of how amused I am with my polymer food. I don't know what it is, but whenever I stare at that winking fried egg, I get all giddy inside...

MONSTER CHARMS

I love Halloween....Halloween is one of those time periods where the month of October feels like it's never long enough...the leaves have turned their autumn colors, the air starts to smell of fall and november coming fires...Each year is unique, and each year has me giddy with excitement thinking about raiding the pharmacies, department stores, craft lobbies and targets for all the spooky goodies that come out for the season. It's no wonder I was inspired to make these monster charms. They're like my little buds --each with a unique personality. Some friends were over the other day and started inquiring about them. I noticed my hand protectively cupping them on the kitchen table.....maybe I need to get out more...?

Custom orders are great. There's a really amazing insight into someone's personality that you get, when they make a special request. For instance, our lady of Guadalupe in a black and hot pink color scheme with lots o' skulls. This was a special purse charm for my friend Carol who definitely has unique tastes in addition to being a kickass hairstylist...I especially liked adding the little rhinestones. Lady Guadalupe as a goth girl? It certainly turned out that way. She looks better, in my opinion...

October 28th - The Second Round

So this month has been a flurry of activity --it started out with vending Komodokat stuff for the first time at my friend's local goth night in Houston and what an amazing success! Saw lots of familiar faces and not so familiar faces --interesting purchases/requests that really got my inspiration juices flowing...

Next time I will be vending on October 28th so here's hoping this time will be just as fun as last, if not better!

Incidentally, my partner in crime will be on tour throughout this month as a fill-in for 80s band Red Flag. How many people on here remember 'Russian Radio'? I'm still in shock at the weirdness of it all!
